This may be a bit round-about but here it goes.
John Gruber commented on Horace Dediu’s observation of app usage at airports as well as on airlines between iOS users and Android users. It just so happened to touch on something I’ve attempted to explain to quite a few others who aren’t wasting a bunch of time reading this stuff like I do.
Android and iOS are two totally different ecosystems.
Google built Android with the intent of “giving it away”, hence it’s Open Source. Apple did the opposite. Both companies did what they do best and are succeeding at it. Albeit, Google isn’t completely “giving it away”, it is still Open Source which by definition means the codebase is truly open for the public to peruse
The Open Source community attracts people who want everything for free while Apple attracts people who are very often throwing $$$ at them before they even tell you what it is they’re going to sell you.
